Individual desire and ability to overcome the rigors of social scrutiny are important factors in the development of an active public performer. In a special study of one song, author Lillis ? Laoire shows how the song itself emerges as a mediator of dilemmas and tensions in island life. In a meticulous exposition of the links between music, text, and performance, the vicissitudes of island life are revealed while these tensions are alleviated by singing humorous ribald lyrics to provide a deliberate contrast. Comparisons are drawn to argue that the interpretation of songs to reveal particular worlds of meaning is a widespread human activity, found in similar configurations at both global and local levels. This book asserts the place of a lost voice within American and African American rhetorical history. Henry McNeal Turner lived a long and productive life with an astonishing myriad of careers: An ordained bishop, orator, newspaper editor and columnist, chaplain, politician, postal officer, janitor, publisher, author, and philosopher. Many admired him for his intelligence, tenacity, his religious fervor and commitment to social injustices in America. Turner was born a "free black" in New Berry Courthouse, South Carolina. His father died when he was quite young leaving his mother, Sarah, and maternal grandmother, Hannah Greer, to raise him. Even though he was born a free person, he nonetheless experienced the harsh realities of prejudice and racism. A poor, uneducated, black youngster growing up in the antebellum South with no father figure, Turner had every excuse for failure; instead, he went to work at an early age to help put food on the table. He worked alongside slaves and, in the winter months, labored in a blacksmith shop. This early exposure to the "real world" made him physically strong, and painfully aware of the inhumane treatment of blacks.

Product Description Long-awaited by fans and collectors, this B-Wing fighter model is an excellent replica of the spaceship rebel forces used in Return of the Jedi's Battle of Endor during the final defeat of the Death Star II and the Empire. A reissue of a formerly released B-Wing fighter set , this ship is bigger than the original—standing 15 inches tall on the display stand--and has almost 100 more pieces . Like the vessel in the movie, the fighter has wings that manually open from parallel to perpendicular and a rotating and self-leveling cockpit. Other features of the B-Wing include a hinged canopy on the cockpit and a missile launcher that shoots two missiles. A docking bay, which doubles as a display stand, holds the missiles and a selection of six tools. The set comes with two B-Wing pilot minifigs . These minifigs have flesh-toned skin instead of the more collectible yellow skin on the earlier Star Wars figures. Purists may also be disappointed that Lego includes decals to adhere to pieces in this set rather than going to the expense of painting designs directly on the bricks.
